In 2017, the Administrator of the Milwaukee County DHHS Housing Division was taking a backpacking trip to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. On his way back to Milwaukee, passing through security at Denver International Airport, he noticed kiosks at the security lines asking for change (which he had to empty out of his pocket anyway) to help homeless programs in the Denver area.
The Housing Division in Milwaukee County was already well on its way to ending chronic homelessness, a feat that had never been accomplished in an area the size of Milwaukee County. However, what good is it to end chronic homelessness only to have it return due to lack of funds or changes in the political winds?
So he approached me and asked me to help him replicate the program he saw in Denver. Specifically, he asked for me to design collection boxes to install at the General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, to support a newly-established endowment fund for Milwaukee County Housing First. along with branding and media support to go along with it.
